Brief History of the Organization

The Liberian Women Empowerment Network (LIWEN) is a registered non-governmental, not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the rights and well-being of women and girls living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Established in 2006 by a core group of women drawn from seven support groups of persons living with HIV, LIWEN was officially registered under the laws of Liberia on February 24, 2011. It remains the only national network exclusively focused on women and girls living and affected by HIV in Liberia.

Since its inception, LIWEN has grown into a formidable advocacy and service organization, with a current membership comprising 37 support groups and 5,000 plus women and girls living and affected by HIV/AIDS across all 15 counties in Liberia. The organization was established primarily as an advocacy platform to ensure that women and girls infected and affected by HIV/AIDS are meaningfully included in the National HIV Response.

LIWEN Geographic Coverage

Liberia is divided into 15 administrative counties, with Monrovia as its capital. LIWEN operates nationwide, with specific project sites in Montserrado, Nimba, Lofa, Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh, Grand Cape Mount, Sinoe, Gbarpolu, River Gee and Margibi counties This broad geographic reach allows LIWEN to address the needs of women and girls in both urban and rural communities, ensuring that hard-to-reach populations receive essential HIV services.

While Liberia has made commendable progress in its HIV response, women and girls remain disproportionately affected, with persistent barriers to healthcare access, economic empowerment, and legal protection. Organizations like LIWEN continue to play a crucial role in addressing these challenges through advocacy, service delivery, and community mobilization. Ensuring sustained investment, policy alignment, and Programmatic support will be key to achieving a gender-transformative and inclusive HIV response in Liberia.
